Beef steak with mushroom sauce

Beef steak with mushroom sauce is a classic and comforting dish. Here’s a straightforward recipe to make a delicious steak with a rich mushroom sauce:

Ingredients

For the Steak

  • 2 beef steaks (ribeye, sirloin, or your favorite cut), about 1-inch thick
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or butter)

For the Mushroom Sauce

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (button, cremini, or a mix)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1 tablespoon flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or fresh thyme if available)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preparing the Steak

  1. Season the Steaks: Pat the steaks dry with paper towels. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

  2. Heat the Pan: Heat the olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat until it’s hot but not smoking.

  3. Cook the Steaks: Add the steaks to the pan and cook to your desired level of doneness:

    • Rare: 2-3 minutes per side
    • Medium-rare: 3-4 minutes per side
    • Medium: 4-5 minutes per side
    • Medium-well: 5-6 minutes per side
    • Well done: 6-7 minutes per side
  4. Rest the Steaks: Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest on a plate, loosely covered with foil, while you prepare the sauce.

Making the Mushroom Sauce

  1. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the butter and melt it over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms, onion, and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are browned and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. Deglaze the Pan: Pour in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon.

  3. Simmer and Thicken: If using flour, sprinkle it over the mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for another minute to get rid of the raw flour taste. Then, add the cream and thyme. Let the sauce simmer gently for 5-7 minutes until it thickens to your liking. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a bit more beef broth or cream. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.

  4. Finish the Sauce: Stir in the soy sauce if using, and cook for another minute. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Serving

  1. Serve the Steaks: Place the steaks on plates or a serving platter.

  2. Top with Sauce: Spoon the mushroom sauce over the steaks. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

  3. Enjoy: Serve with your favorite side dishes, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a simple green salad.

This dish pairs well with a full-bodied red wine, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Enjoy your steak with a rich and flavorful mushroom sauce!
